Throughout his life he struggled with financial difficulties despite having multiple businesses and being in contact with many notables of the day. He painted the famous Girl with a Pearl Earring which today is compared to the Mona Lisa. Johannes was never really famous during his life but was successful enough to be able to sell his works with above average pricing. It wasn't until the 19th century that he was rediscovered by museum director Gustav Waagen and published in Théophile Thoré-Bürger's art catalogue that worldwide recognition soon appeared.
