Wednesday, March 6th 1968. Footage of Dr. Eduardo Mondlane (1920-1969), the President of Frelimo (Frente de Libertaqao de Mocambique), the Mozambican Liberation Front speaking at the Africa Centre in Covent Garden, London. Dr. Mondlane, who was on a 10-day tour, was embarked on a campaign of winning British public support for the African nationalist movement against Portuguese rule in Mozambique. He was the first African Mozambican to enter the University of Lisbon in 1950, however, he transferred to Oberlin College in the United States where he recieved his BA in 1953. He then obtained his MA and PhD in sociology at Northwestern University. In 1957 he joined the Trusteeship Department of the United Nations as a research officer, and from 1961 to 1963 he was a professor at Syracuse University. After the independence of Tanganyika (later Tanzania), he went to Dar-es-Salaam to work for Mozambique's liberation. 2. On February 3 1969, Mondlane was assassinated by PIDE, the secret police of the Estado Novo; the Portuguese regime established by António de Oliveira Salazar. Mondlane's assassin was later identified as Casimiro Monteiro, the PIDE agent who also assassinated General Humberto Delgado.
