Thunderbolt 3 vs USB 4 External SSD | M1 Mac

If you’ve wondered about the Thunderbolt 3 vs. the USB 4 external SSD on your M1 Mac, and whether there’s a difference, then this review video may answer some questions to help you make that buying decision. I recently did a video on editing on the fastest external SSD for on the M1 Mac, and this is a follow up to that video where I compare the Thunderbolt 3 NVMe enclosure to the USB 4 NVMe enclosure. There are some synthetic benchmarks, but I also provide you with some additional testing where I export a multi-camera 4K timeline on each of these drives. In addition, all cables are certified Thunderbolt cables, and I've even tried these enclosures with an active Thunderbolt cable. I also meant to share the temps on these drives during export: 4K Export: TB3 with the SN750: 48.5C/119.3F on the SSD, and 31.2C/88.1F with the case/top on. 4K Export: USB4 with the SN750: 52.1C/125.7F on the SSD, and 35.6C/96F with the case/top on. 4K Export: USB4 with Silicon Power: 61.5C/142.7F on the SSD, and 32.3C/89.9 with the case/top on. Transfer ~160GB of data: TB3 with Silicon Power 73.6C/164.4F on the SSD, and 37.5C/99.5F with the case/top on.
