THE PIGEON PEA REVOLUTION: MAKUENI-KILIFI & STEPHEN MUTIE'S EFFORTS IN ADDRESSING FOOD SECURITY.
In the final part of our farming series in Madunguni village, Malindi Sub County, we meet Stephen Muoki Mutie, a passionate farmer originally from Makueni County who discovered the great farming potential of Madunguni. Drawn by the fertile soils and reliable water supply from River Sabaki, Stephen made the bold decision to start farming in the area — and the results have been impressive. After several successful farming seasons, Stephen is now piloting a new venture in the region: pigeon pea farming. Bringing the crop from his home county of Makueni, he has planted over 1,000 pigeon pea plants, hoping to introduce and expand this resilient and profitable crop in Madunguni. Pigeon peas are known for their drought tolerance, strong market demand, and soil fertility benefits, making them an attractive option for farmers in Kenya’s coastal and semi-arid regions. In this episode, Stephen takes us through: Why he moved from Makueni to Madunguni to farm How River Sabaki supports farming in the region Why he believes pigeon peas could become a major crop in Madunguni His journey, challenges, and hopes for the future His story is a powerful example of innovation, resilience, and the growing opportunities in Kenya’s agriculture sector. Watch the full episode to learn how farmers are transforming Madunguni into one of Kilifi County’s emerging farming hubs.
