In the 1970s and 1980s, the main compact buses were truck-based models, such as the KaVZ-685. However, over time, it became clear that a more modern and fuel-efficient bus was needed; comfort and capacity needed to be increased; it was important to maintain off-road capability and ease of repair for rural roads. The new bus was developed at the Kurgan Bus Plant in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The main idea was to use the proven GAZ-53 truck chassis, modernize the body, and improve passenger and driver comfort. The bonnet layout (engine in the front) was retained because it simplified repairs, improved off-road capability, and was suitable for use in rural areas. The KaVZ-3270 bus also appeared in scenes from films such as... August 1989, Brunette for 30 Kopeks, 1991, Act 1993, Lemon Vodka 2003, White Snow 2021 The KavZ-3270 received: a V8 gasoline engine from the GAZ-53; a capacity of approximately 20-25 people; high ground clearance; a simple and robust design. Compared to its predecessors: improved cabin insulation; increased glass area; slightly increased seat comfort; and a refreshed body appearance. Serial production began in the 1980s. The bus was widely used: in rural areas; as a company vehicle; for transporting schoolchildren; on short suburban routes. In 1989, the bus underwent another upgrade (KavZ-3271), receiving a modernized GAZ-53-12 chassis. In 1991, due to changes in safety and certification requirements, the model was replaced by the more advanced KAVZ-3976, built on the GAZ-3307 chassis. Subsequently, these buses gave way to more modern cabover models, but the KAVZ-3270 remained an important part of the history of Soviet bus production. The KAVZ-3270 was designed as a versatile vehicle for rural areas. Its truck chassis provided excellent cross-country ability on poor roads, ease of maintenance, and reliability, making it one of the most widely used buses in the provinces. It was one of the last models of the classic "bonnet" buses; it demonstrated a desire to modernize an outdated concept; it retained its core qualities—reliability, simplicity, and cross-country ability.
