NLP & Hypnosis: What is the Milton Model?
The Milton Model is like an inverse of the Meta Model that we saw in an earlier video. Its purpose is to open up the mind to alternative possibilities. And the main way it does this is by being artfully vague! Watching this video is worth 2 Management Courses CPD Points*. š See below for details NLP This video is part of course module 2.9.3 Program 2: Manager as Communicator Course 9: NLP Section 3: Changing People Dr Mike Clayton has been an NLP Master Practitioner since 2003. Erickson had a naturally hypnotic way of speaking with his patients. He used vague language and seized on whatever was happening in the room, to help his patients to make changes. At the heart of the Milton Model for language is the idea of embedding presuppositions into everything you say, so that the patient will start to believe the change has happened. I do not intend to try and teach you Ericksonian hypnosis, nor even how to use the Milton Model. I simply want to give you a sense of the kinds of language patterns that practitioners use. Letās go through the example in the video⦠āI know that you are wondering what the Milton Model is. A mind read ā claiming to know what you are thinking, gently encouraging you to think it. 'And itās a good thing to be wondering' Who says? This states something as if itās obviously true. Called a Lost performative. 'Because that means you are learning many things. ' Cause and effect - which is unproven, but you may well adopt this belief And then I presuppose that you are learning many things, so again, it gently nudges you to believe it too. 'Arenāt you?' A simple tag question gives you choice. It makes you feel in control and therefore reduces resistance. 'And all the things that you can learn will give you new insights and a new understanding.' 'All the things' is a massive generalization that creates the feeling of something big. The words āinsightā and āunderstandingā turn a process into a thing. It feels like you just get them, without having to actively do anything. Itās easy. 'And that means that your unconscious mind is processing this information and understanding it, even if you do not consciously think you understand it.ā A double bind. This is a statement where I win, whichever of two competing options is true. ⢠You either consciously understand what I said ā great! ⢠Or you didnāt, so instead, your unconscious mind understood it.
