Let's explore the depths of it in the video. Ned steps into the maesters tent as he hears the summons of the healers and doctors. As he pulls the flap open, he’s immediately wafted by the scent of dried blood and pus. The Lord of Winterfell tries to stop himself from recoiling, but forces himself inside. Though the battle might be over, the tent is still busy as they try to treat all the wounded left behind. The clash was so bloody that days later, the tent was still filled with wounded. Unfortunately, by the looks of things, it seems that many of those men will not survive. He makes his way towards the end of the room, where a group of these surgeons is treating Robert. The young Lord of Storm’s End looks ashen, though he manages a smile at Ned. Remarkably, as he approaches, the lord sits up and looks over at him. His waist and stomach are bandaged, but blood continues to seep through them, staining his stomach red. This was due to an injury he suffered from Rhaegar during their clash. When Ned turns to the surgeon, the man looks away and gives a small shake of his head. Robert’s smile fades and he nods. Robert: That bastard got me good, didn’t he? Bloody dragon couldn’t be satisfied with just dying with dignity; he still found a way to vex me. I suppose I won’t be seeing Lyanna any time soon then… Ned: I’ll find her, Robert. I promise you that. Your actions made things much easier. Robert: Easier, but not done. No, not when King’s Landing remains in the dragon's palm. Not while the Mad King lives. You’ll need to finish this war. Ned: I will, Robert. I’ll bring her home. Robert: Thank you, my friend. Barristan: Coughs. Pardon me for interrupting, my lords. But if you truly wish to do this, it raises the question. Who shall succeed the Mad King? Do you intend to crown Prince Viserys? Robert: No, the dragons have had their chance, and they chose barbarity. I will not see one of them on the throne once again. If there shall be a king, it will be someone of my own blood. Stannis, yes. He is smart enough for it. Lift the siege of Storm’s End and bring him to King’s Landing. Barristan: Stannis? Robert: Why not? Isn’t he dragon enough for you? Chuckles. You know, my family descended from Orys Baratheon, Aegon’s half-brother. And my grandmother wed a Targaryen, too. We have a claim to the throne, too. Is that a problem for you, ser? Barristan: None, your grace. And yet I must ask. What shall become of the young prince and Rhaegar’s family? Robert: I suppose that this isn’t for me to decide any longer. Chuckles, heh, it seems like I will not have to deal with this tedious business any longer. Now enough of your long faces. I need a bloody drink. One last drink. He shouts for a surgeon who offers him his wine skin, and the three men drink until later that night, Robert slips into a sleep that he does not wake up from. As Ned wipes his eyes and stares at his friend, he bites back a sob and sees Ser Barristan is also wiping tears from his eyes. The old knight volunteers to ride back to Storm’s End and pick up Stannis to escort him back to King’s Landing. With Rhaegar dead, he can convince the Tyrells to lower their banner and surrender. In the meantime, Ned must ride south to King’s Landing and secure it for the king. It takes a few more days of rest, but the old knight is soon well enough to travel and rides back south. He takes a handful of trusted men along with the white banner. While he might no longer have a prince to protect, he remains one of the Kingsguard, and that banner carries weight. Just as he predicts, when he reaches Storm’s End, the Reachmen are in chaos as they have just received word of Rhaegar’s death and have no idea what to do next. Even Mace can barely keep order as he tries to consider his options. The arrival of the old knight gives them the direction they are more than happy to embrace. He tells them that the battle is lost and there is no further need for bloodshed. More importantly, Robert has proclaimed Stannis his heir. At this, Mace pales as he fears Stannis may have fallen during the siege. Yet as the banners are lowered and Ser Barristan proclaims that the battle is won, he is relieved to see the new king. He looks half-starved, with sunken eyes and ribs poking out from his chest. #gameofthrones #gameofthroneswhatif #whatif
