Die Nella Dan als Kartonmodell

Hello and welcome to this report about Nella Dan. It was a Danish polar research vessel and the model is 1:250 scale. It is an old model published by Wilhelmshavener Modellbauverlag and is still available. She was built in 1961 and entered service in 1962. It was 76 meters long, corresponding to 30.4 cm long as a model. It was a relatively small ship that mostly sailed in Antarctica, where there are always storms and high waves. In any case, the men on board must have been quite seaworthy. The Nella Dan was able to take an additional 42 passengers on board. Although she was not an icebreaker, her reinforced hull allowed her to travel through ice up to one meter thick at a speed of 6 knots. From the beginning, the Nella Dan was leased to the Australian government, which used her as a supply ship for various research stations. She made a total of 85 trips to Antarctica, setting a record that is still valid today. I also provided the model with a few pieces of cargo on the loading deck. I enjoyed building the model. It's neither too big nor too small, it fit well on the desk and didn't take up much space. On December 3, 1987, a storm ripped the ship, which was on a supply trip off Macquarie Island, from its anchorage and drove it towards land. There she ran aground and was badly damaged. Repair was deemed uneconomical and so she was towed into 200 meters of water, where she caught fire and sank on December 24, 1987. This is how the story of Nella Dan ends. I thank you for taking your time and say goodbye
