The Soviet-Polish War of 1919–1920 was part of the larger Civil War in the former Russian Empire. However, this war was perceived by Russians—both those who fought for the Reds and those who sided with the Whites—as a war against an external enemy. Before World War I, most of Poland was Russian territory, while other parts belonged to Germany and Austria-Hungary—an independent Polish state had not existed for almost a century and a half. It is noteworthy that at the outbreak of the war, both the Tsarist government and the Germans and Austrians officially promised the Poles to recreate an independent Polish monarchy after victory. This led to thousands of Poles fighting on both sides of the front. Poland's political fate was determined by the fact that in 1915, under enemy pressure, the Russian army was forced to retreat east from the Vistula. All Polish territory fell under German control, and in November 1918, after Germany's capitulation, power over Poland automatically passed to this man—Józef Klemens Piłsudski. This Polish nationalist spent a quarter of a century engaged in the anti-Russian struggle. At the outbreak of World War I, he formed the "Polish Legions"—volunteer units within the Austro-Hungarian forces fighting Russia. After the capitulation of Germany and Austria, the "legionnaires" became the foundation of the new Polish government, and Piłsudski officially received the title of "Chief of State," or dictator. At the same time, the new Poland, led by a military dictator, was supported by the victors of World War I, primarily France and, of course, the United States...
