The 29th Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF), one of Asia's largest film festivals, opened on October 25th at Roppongi Hills (Minato Ward, Tokyo) and other venues. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe appeared as a guest at the opening ceremony held at EX Theater Roppongi, saying, "It seems that the much-talked-about 'Shin Godzilla' will also be screened. My wife recommended it to me a lot." He added, "In the first half, the Prime Minister dies along with the Chief Cabinet Secretary. The ceremony took place before the screening of the festival's opening film, "Florence Fosters" (directed by Stephen Frears), and was attended by lead actress Meryl Streep, festival muse and actress Haru Kuroki, directors Brillante Mendoza, Isao Yukisada, and Soto Quarriker, jury members from each category, Prime Minister Abe, and Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Hiroshige Seko. TIFF is one of Asia's largest film festivals, having launched in 1985 and celebrating its 29th anniversary this year. This year's opening film is "Florence Fosters," in which Streep plays a woman dreaming of becoming a soprano singer and Hugh Grant plays her husband who supports her dream. The closing film is "Satoshi's Youth" (directed by Yoshitaka Mori), in which Kenichi Matsuyama plays legendary shogi player Satoshi Murayama. Special screenings of directors Shunji Iwai and Mamoru Hosoda will also be held. Other events include the "Kabukiza Special Night" featuring female Kabuki actor Onoe Kikunosuke, a screening accompanied by a narrator and live music; the "Asian Omnibus Film Production Series: Asian Three-Fold Mirror," in which director Yukisada Isao and others will collaborate to produce an omnibus film under a single theme; a new Youth Division (TIFF Children/TIFF Teens) aimed at and themed around young people; the anime event "TIFF Ani!!"; and the "Tokyo International Film Festival Cinema Arena," an outdoor screening at Roppongi Hills Arena. The festival will screen a total of 203 films, running until November 3rd.
