'Dear You' – a Chaozhou-dialect film about the "Qiaopi" letters that connected overseas Chinese to home – has taken Malaysia by storm, grossing over 15 million Ringgit and becoming 2026's top Chinese-language film there. But the numbers aren't what moved me most. It was the sight of elderly Chinese-Malaysians leaving theaters in tears – some in wheelchairs, others holding old family letters they'd kept for generations. I gathered reactions from three generations of Malaysian Chinese. One said: "We have never been forgotten." Another: "I finally understand what 'we help our own' really means."
