He received a text-to-speech message and was responding to that. The 1-up at 12:48 is actually not determined by RNG! This is something I actually did not know at the time. It will always try to run away from Mario depending on his position relative to it (Thanks to Xein64 for the clarification). However, with the way this person was running around with no setup, it might as well have been RNG if he really was blindfolded.
