Horseshoe Lake Trail — Denali National Park | A Moose, a Still Lake, and the Forest

Horseshoe Lake Trail sits in the entrance area of Denali National Park and Preserve in Interior Alaska — a short, easy walk through boreal forest to a still oxbow lake that was once a bend in the Nenana River. We started the morning at the trailhead and met a moose feeding in the willows before we’d taken twenty steps. From there the trail descends through spruce and birch, opening up to Horseshoe Lake from multiple viewpoints — still water, forest to the bank, reflections. We continued past the lake to the quieter Nenana River oxbow, where the water sits mirror-flat and the river itself stays just out of sight. This is the kind of trail Denali’s entrance area does quietly and well: short, forested, and full of the things the park was set aside to protect.
