Everest In Winter: The Impossible Solo / EPISODE 21 “The Path of the Ancestors”

Nearly a decade ago I found myself without food in the middle of a civil war zone in a jungle, climbing the tallest peak of Oceania and the most technical of the Seven Summits. In this episode we'll travel deep into the jungle through the ancestors’ path, following Jan Carstensz's discovery. Jan was the 1st European ever to lay eyes on the glaciers of Puncak Jaya, or Carstestensz Pyramid (4884m). 1962 Austrian mountaineer Heinrich Harrer, New Zealand mountaineer Philip Temple, Australian rock climber Russell Kippax, and Dutch patrol officer Albertus (Bert) Huizenga opened the 1st route leading all the way to the summit. In 2018 I got a rare opportunity to walk to the mountain on foot. The trip was a success, and I reached the summit via the Messner's route. In addition, I opened a new route on the mountain. However, things could've gone totally to the opposite direction. I ran out of food, it was pouring most of the time, I got food poisoning from eating garbage, a storm hit while I was soloing... I also nearly missed my flight back home from the jungle, but managed to hop on the plane just as it was about to fly off. Over the years this and many other extreme experiences have led me to finally set my eyes on my current goal. Everest winter solo.
