Burundi is a small, landlocked country located in East Africa, bordered by Rwanda to the north, Tanzania to the east, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west. It is often cited as one of the poorest countries in the world, a situation that is the result of a complex interplay of historical, political, and economic factors. Historical Context: Burundi gained independence from Belgium in 1962, but its post-colonial history has been marred by ethnic conflict, particularly between the Hutu and Tutsi groups. The country experienced a brutal civil war from 1993 to 2005, which resulted in significant loss of life, displacement of people, and deep social divisions. The effects of this conflict have had lasting impacts on the nation’s development. Economic Challenges: The economy of Burundi is primarily agrarian, with about 90% of the population engaged in subsistence farming. Coffee and tea are the main cash crops, but agricultural productivity is limited due to factors such as poor soil quality, lack of modern farming techniques, and environmental challenges like soil erosion.
