Local Village Life In Burundi and Street Food - Not What You Would Expect 🇧🇮 (friendly people)

Burundi is a small, landlocked country located in East Africa, bordered by Rwanda to the north, Tanzania to the east, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west. It is often cited as one of the poorest countries in the world, a situation that is the result of a complex interplay of historical, political, and economic factors. Historical Context: Burundi gained independence from Belgium in 1962, but its post-colonial history has been marred by ethnic conflict, particularly between the Hutu and Tutsi groups. The country experienced a brutal civil war from 1993 to 2005, which resulted in significant loss of life, displacement of people, and deep social divisions. The effects of this conflict have had lasting impacts on the nation’s development. Economic Challenges: The economy of Burundi is primarily agrarian, with about 90% of the population engaged in subsistence farming. Coffee and tea are the main cash crops, but agricultural productivity is limited due to factors such as poor soil quality, lack of modern farming techniques, and environmental challenges like soil erosion. Infrastructure is underdeveloped, and access to basic services such as healthcare and education is severely limited. Social Factors: Burundi has some of the lowest human development indicators in the world. High population density, widespread poverty, and inadequate access to clean water and sanitation contribute to a cycle of poverty. Malnutrition is prevalent, and many families struggle to meet their basic needs. Political instability and governance issues further complicate efforts to improve living conditions. International Aid: Given its economic struggles, Burundi relies heavily on international aid for development and humanitarian support. Various organizations work within the country to provide assistance in areas such as health, education, and food security. However, dependence on aid can also create challenges in terms of self-sufficiency and long-term development. Despite these challenges, there are efforts ongoing to promote peace, stability, and economic growth in Burundi. Community initiatives and grassroots movements strive to foster resilience and hope among the population. Addressing the complex issues of poverty, governance, and social cohesion will be crucial for the future development of this resilient nation. ________________________________________ Quit my corporate job in September 2021 to chase new destinations and document my life.
