Psychiatric literature on suicide focuses primarily on the external world of the suicidal patient, but this, while valuable, is insufficient for understanding and managing specific cases. This article attempts to explore the "internal phenomenology" of the suicidal act and demonstrates that this deeper understanding is necessary for the appropriate management of specific cases.
