In Odia tradition, Sankranti marks the transition of the Sun (Surya Dev) from one zodiac sign (Rashi) to the next. The very first day of this change is called Sankranti, considered highly auspicious. On this day, people avoid consuming onion, garlic, and non-vegetarian food, maintaining purity in thoughts and actions. Early in the morning, devotees take a holy dip in rivers or bathe at home using Ganga water (Gangajal), believing it cleanses sins and brings blessings. Offering charity (Dana) is an essential part of the observance — donating food, clothes, sesame seeds, and other essentials to the needy. The first and most important Sankranti of the Odia calendar is Maha Bisuba Sankranti or Pana Sankranti, which is also the Odia New Year. It falls in April when Sun enters Mesha Rashi (Aries). People prepare a cooling drink called Pana made with bael fruit, yogurt, jaggery, and water to beat the summer heat and offer it to Lord Jagannath. This day also celebrates Hanuman Jayanti, marking the birth of Lord Hanuman. Each Sankranti has its own local significance — Dhanu Sankranti in Margasira month, Makar Sankranti in the month of Pausha (famous for kite flying and offering Makar Chaula), Kumbha Sankranti, Mesha Sankranti, Karka Sankranti, and others. In rural Odisha, Sankranti days are also tied to agricultural cycles, folk festivals, and seasonal rituals. Women often perform special Puja at home for family well-being, and temples hold elaborate rituals to honor Surya Dev.
