Mastering Crop Performance with CEA Tech | Controlled Environment Agriculture Technology
Today’s video is about mastering crop performance with CEA, controlled environment agriculture systems. Karla García from Hort Americas discusses how to improve pro performance with CEA technologies. This is closely related to greenhouse management, which can be fairly complex, but in this video presentation, we will summarize the most important variables that you can manage inside of the system and how the plant responds to these variables. The more you analyze, the more you can manage. This is something really important to understand inside of a growing system. There are a lot of variables that can be measured, so it's really important not only to measure these variables, but to understand these variables and analyze the variables in order to make the correct decisions inside of the system. The more control you have inside of the system, you will have better results consistency and more predictable results, so these are really important characteristics for any grower. Knowledge is power, so it's important to recognize that we need to study and really understand how plants behave, so we need to have a deep understanding about plant physiology. If you are working inside of that greenhouse and you are looking to have good results, there are a lot of variables inside of a growing system. I have a list of the most important variables. We have temperature with our airspeed, humidity, CO2, light, nutrients, and root zone. So an indoor system will include greenhouse production and also plant factory production, which is with just artificial light. According to new research data, the global market for controlled environment agriculture (CEA) is expected to reach $100 billion by 2030, with six possible prospects grabbing $78 billion in market share. CEA, a technology-based indoor technique to raising crops in ideal growing circumstances, is quickly spreading, owing in part to rising consumer demand for low-impact food, local food systems, and increased access to high-quality produce with shorter supply chains. CEA includes not only vertical farming but also indoor cultivation of a growing number of specialty crops for a variety of applications ranging from food to health. CEA has attracted a lot of attention in the last ten years, with technological development prospects spanning a wide range of industries, including energy, construction/real estate, water, and agriculture. However, based on existing CEA technology, this space still has a long way to go in terms of matching the pricing of vegetables grown outdoors and crop diversity. Efficiency in energy management, the availability of a competent and economical personnel, and increases in the quality and quantity of fresh fruit are the three primary obstacles for the development of CEA systems. If the CEA sector does not innovate to overcome these problems, it will have slower growth rates and will be unable to meet rising consumer demand.
