Na Íntegra - Sidney Chalhoub - História do Brasil - Abolição

Interview with Sidney Chalhoub, historian and professor at the Institute of Philosophy and Human Sciences (IFCH) at Unicamp. Complementary program for the Pedagogy course at Univesp/Unesp https://goo.gl/7sghy2 (Recorded in 2010). In this interview, Sidney talks about slavery in Brazil in the second half of the 19th century and explains, with rich examples, what life was like for African slaves in Brazil. He says that a few decades before the abolition of slavery in 1888, almost half of the African population in the country was already free or freed. Freedmen were former slaves who had obtained their letter of manumission. Freemen were the children of freed slaves (wombs). Sidney also talks about the situation that this mass of citizens found themselves in after their freedom, with few or no political rights, little income, etc. Sidney also addresses the issue of education for slaves and freedmen and shows that Brazil had no interest in teaching these people to read and write.
