All the important characters such as Kathi, Pacha, Thadi and Minukku find their places in it. The famous acts such as 'Ekalochanam' and 'Kummi' from part of this. The story starts with Pandavas residing in disguise (Ajnathavasa) in the palace of king Virata. Duryodhana doubting the presence of Pandavas in VIRATA'S palace takes away the cows of Virata. Arjuna who stays in the palace as Brihannala a eunuch dance teacher defeats the Kaurava army single-handedly and takes the cows back. Virata gives his daughter Uthara to Abhimanyu, the son of Arjuna. The kathakali starts wit a pathinja padam (love scene) of Duryodhana with queen Bhanumathi. The famous 'ekalochanam' is enacted here in which Duryodhana says to Bhanumathi that keki bird mistaking her face as moon and fearing separation from her husband (these birds are supposed to be separating during night) looks at her with anger in one eye and at its mate with grief in the other eye. One can see both the bhavas of anger and sorrow on the actor's face almost simultaneously. In the next scene a spy comes and tells Duryodhana that Keechaka is killed in Virata's palace. If Keechaka is dead, the killer can only be Bheema. Duryodhana calls Susarmavu, the king of Thrigartha Kingdom to take away all the cows of Virata. Knowing this Virata comes to fight with Thrigarthan and gets defeated. Then Valalan (Bheema in disguise) comes to the rescue of Virata.
