Heilung - Krigsgaldr | Sunday Roadtrip Ep 153

"Krigsgaldr" is the breakout masterpiece by the international experimental neofolk collective Heilung. The track serves as a premier example of what the band terms "amplified history," bringing the sounds, poems, and runic inscriptions of the European Iron and Viking Ages back to life. Release and Album Details Album: "Krigsgaldr" originally debuted on Heilung’s self-released first studio album, titled Ofnir (ᛟᚠᚾᛁᚱ). Release Year: The album was officially released on June 2, 2015. Live Variant: The song achieved massive viral fame through its 2017 live performance on the concert album Lifa. Band Members and Feature Musicians on the Track At the exact time "Krigsgaldr" was written and tracked, Heilung was technically a two-man project, meaning the dynamic of the core trio we know today was still forming: Kai Uwe Faust (Core Member): Delivered the haunting, deep Tibetan-style throat singing and spoken poems. Christopher Juul (Core Member): Handled the complex studio production, sound design, and ancient percussion arrangements. Maria Franz (Featured Vocalist / Core Member): Contributed her ethereal, spine-chilling "whispering" and clean vocals specifically for "Krigsgaldr" as a session guest singer. She officially joined as the third permanent core member a few months after the album dropped. Fascinating Recording Anecdotes & Trivia The Tattoo Deal: Heilung was born out of a literal barter system. Kai Uwe Faust, an expert Old Norse tattoo artist, offered Christopher Juul (a studio engineer) free tattoos in exchange for studio time to help record some of his spoken-word pagan poetry. Those sessions rapidly evolved into the band's entire musical framework. Bizarre and Sacred Instrumentation: The band explicitly avoids modern instruments. The backing textures of "Krigsgaldr" and the rest of the album utilize human bones (including a forearm bone), ancient frame drums, rattled buffalo horns, bronze rings, and a frame drum made of horse skin painted with actual human blood. The "Lullaby of Obliteration": The contrasting vocal dynamics in "Krigsgaldr"—shifting directly from Maria's melodic, soothing verses to Kai's harsh, aggressive warrior chants—is affectionately referred to by the band's community as a "lullaby of obliteration". Pre-Show Rituals: Before performing the track live, the entire ensemble engages in an intimate, traditional spiritual ceremony involving smudging with sage and binding their arms in a circle to channel the energy of ancient ancestry. 🎧 Let us know your favourite track in the comments. 👍 Like, subscribe, and hit the bell for more in-depth explorations. #SundayRoadtrip #Heilung #Krigsgaldr #NordicFolk #DarkFolk #VikingMusic #RitualMusic #PaganFolk #Neofolk #AmbientMusic #TribalMusic #NorseMythology #AncientMusic #FolkRevival #MusicDiscovery #EpicMusic
