The Villa de Azúa de Compostela was founded in 1504 by the advance Diego Velázquez de Cuéllar (conqueror of Cuba), during the government of Don Nicolás de Ovando. In 1507, that is, barely three years after it was founded, it was introduced to Azua, as its Patron, La Virgen de los Remedios. The meaning of the name Azua Much has been speculated about Azua's name. In Peru, the Indians called azua a drink made from corn. In Venezuela there were the Azuas Indians. As stated by Don Emiliano Tejeda in his work «Indigenous Words of Santo Domingo», Azua, is an autochthonous word of the island. The Tainos used to call this territory in the south of our island with that name. It should be noted that some historiographical currents affirm that the name of the city should be written with S and not with Z, because the natives did not articulate this last vowel.
