Following the Union Pacific 4014 Big Boy between Lockport, IL and Chenoa, IL 07/17/26
The Union Pacific Big Boy 4014 steam locomotive was making its way back west after traveling on Norfolk Southern rails to the east coast and was taking the former Alton Route between the Chicago suburbs and St. Louis. I decided to head to Lockport, IL on the CN Joliet sub (not far north where it becomes Union Pacific) and get it by the historic Gaylord Building. Two diesel locomotives were trailing including UP 1616 (Abraham Lincoln tribute SD70M) and UP 1976 (SD70M). The Lincoln SD70M was fitting since he traveled this route plus his strong ties to many communities on the line especially Springfield, IL. Not sure what UP was doing with 1776 but it was a swing and a miss as far as a 250th Anniversary engine as CN, CPKC, CSX, NS, and BNSF all revealed multiple tribute engines all pretty neat looking. Getting a good view in Lockport was easy as everyone was spread put meaning not much was in the way of getting a good shot. Afterwards I drove over to I-55 and went south of Joliet, IL getting the train again by Gardner, IL, Odell, IL, and Chenoa, IL. I was hoping to get it one more time in either Lexington or Towanda but the people pacing the train ended up causing a backup so I stopped the chase. They would pick up speed approaching 50mph outside of Joliet, IL. Definitely a sight to see. Enjoy and don't forget to comment and subscribe!
