Sound Design Tutorial: How to Make Realistic Wind FX

How to make wind sound effects in any DAW using basic audio plug-ins. Wind noise from cameras often sounds harsh and unusable when recording on a windy day. The rumble and flapping sound is just too much if a blimp or windscreen is not used on the microphone. A good choice is to substitute the recorded sound with a wind sound effect that can be made pastoral or spooky to taste. 00:00 Introduction 00:53 Sound effects philosophy 01:54 Starting the process in the DAW 06:34 Automating filter EQ in DAW 11:05 Layering multiple tracks 14:38 The DAW crashes 18:50 Breakfast break 19:39 Part two and sitting on headphones 19:57 Adding low mid frequency and howling elements 23:56 Outro and Final Wind Audio The process involves using a synthesizer plug-in capable of noise samples and/or a noise generator then manipulating that sound with equalizers and other filters. Parameters in the filter are automated, programmed with subtle variation to make it sound cinematic. It is a fun and straight forward process that I use regularly in film and video soundtracks.
