George Wallace: The Man Who Sold His Soul for Power

George Wallace was one of the most polarizing figures in modern American politics. He rose from Alabama courthouse steps to the national stage, ran for president multiple times, and became a symbol of segregationist resistance before surviving an assassination attempt in 1972. This episode traces the machine behind his power, the media storm around his campaigns, and the forces that made him a national contender. We follow Wallace through the 1968 and 1972 races, Arthur Bremer’s attack in Maryland, his return to Alabama politics, and the complex shift in his later years as he publicly sought reconciliation. We place these events in the broader context of changing party coalitions, voter realignment, and the long shadow the era cast over national campaigns that followed. By the 1980s and 1990s, Wallace’s public stance had changed and he pursued outreach to Black voters in Alabama. He died on September 13, 1998.
