CORNUS CONTROVERSA VARIEGATA / WEDDING CAKE TREE

This week after months of searching gardening centres and on-line I get to plant a Wedding Cake Tree (Cornus Controversa Variegata). Several months ago I discovered a large patio hidden under a lawn and I spent several weeks this year lifting sod, cleaning out the cracks between pavers and cleaning the stones. I am also carrying out an experiment to see what types of plants are best to plant between the paving stones given my harsh mountain climate which is cold in winter but also extremely hot in summer. Since this patio is large, large areas of hardscaping can be harsh on the eyes so I want to "soften" it up. Therefore my 2 specimen trees of choice are 1) Japanese Maple (Shin Deshojo) and 2) Cornus Controversa Variegata (Wedding Cake Tree). These two trees by the very nature of their branch shape automatically soften their surroundings. This Cornus can be placed in Full Sun or Partial Shade and it spreads to around 10 feet. Since it is best left unpruned as much as possible I have planted it far enough away from the fence to be able to leave it more or less to its own devices.
