Traxxas TRX 4 Clicking Sound Fix
Hello everyone! I noticed that my Defender started making the dreaded clicking noise sometime last year. Since then, I haven't really got the time to open it up and fix it, but I finally had enough time to troubleshoot and fix this issue during the past week. There are several videos about this already (for the single and two speed transmissions), but I just thought I'd put this out there as another source of information. Video transcript: I discovered that there was a shim missing on the spur gear shaft which was causing the excessive play. Since I did not have any extra shims on hand, what I did was to move one of the shims from the transfer case to the shaft. Overall summary: The clicking was caused by shims in the wrong place (or missing shims). My guess is that there was a shim missing from the factory (pretty probable, since shims are easy miss, and the people who build these are under a time constraint), since this particular car came as a prebuilt RTR. Also, my other TRX-4, which I built as a kit has never had any sort of clicking. So that explains a lot of things. If yours was a kit, there may be a chance that you didn’t place the shims in the correct places, but if you made sure everything is in the right place, check for play in the transmission shafts, and add additional shims so that the gears won’t shift under load. (some parts have varying tolerances) The shims you will need are 5x8x0.5 mm shims (the ones that come with the transmission) or 5x8x0.1 mm shims (thinner) for better fine tuning. Everything is linked in the description down below. You might also notice that the clicking sound varies from car to car. One reason could be that different cars have shims installed in different places, causing different clicking rhythms and frequencies.
