Quiraing Hike, Isle of Skye | Hiking Scotland’s Most Scenic Trail in Winds and Rain

Perched high on the dramatic Trotternish Ridge, the Quiraing Trail on the Isle of Skye delivered one of the most unforgettable hikes of our trip to Scotland. We set out under cloudy skies with light rain falling, but the weather quickly turned as we climbed higher into the rugged landscape. By the time we reached the upper sections of the trail, we were completely inside the cloud. Winds gusted across the ridge, visibility dropped to just a few metres, and the trail itself seemed to disappear into the mist. Even in these conditions, the scenery was extraordinary. Towering rocky crags and jagged formations rose out of the hillsides, and when the clouds briefly lifted we could glimpse vast vistas stretching for miles toward the sea. The Quiraing’s unique landscape—formed by an ancient landslip—creates one of the most dramatic hiking environments in Scotland. At the highest point, navigating became part of the adventure. With the path fading into the fog, we relied on my GPS watch to keep us moving in the right direction. The weather also took its toll on the gear—my gimbal stopped working properly in the wind and rain—and despite wearing full rain gear we were soaked to the skin. But this was exactly the kind of experience we had hoped for. Battling the elements on a wild Scottish ridge felt like an authentic Highland hike, and we relished every minute of it. The Quiraing may have tested us with wind, rain, and fog, but it also delivered a powerful reminder of why this corner of the Isle of Skye is considered one of the most spectacular landscapes in the world.
