"After the assassination of Vitellius, war ceased rather than peace began. With these cheerful, hopeful words, translated by Severin Hammer, the ever-optimistic Tacitus characterized the first days and weeks after Vitellius's fall in December 69. The new ruler of the empire, Vespasian, was still on the Nile, in Alexandria, waiting for favorable summer winds that would allow him to safely sail to Italy. His eldest son, Titus, was simultaneously preparing to lay siege to Jerusalem and deal the final blow to the nearly four-year-old revolt in neighboring Judea.
