The USTR has decided to impose new tariffs by utilizing Section 301 of the Trade Act, instead of Section 122, which expires tomorrow (the 25th). This effectively creates a structure where global tariffs fill the void left by reciprocal tariffs that disappeared due to rulings of illegality, and now, as the deadline for global tariffs approaches, they are being replaced by tariffs under Section 301 of the Trade Act. The applicable tariff rates were set at 10% for countries that have implemented measures to ban forced labor and 12.5% ​​for those that have not; South Korea was set at 12.5%, along with Japan. Countries classified as having relevant systems but insufficient enforcement, such as Canada and the European Union, will be subject to a 10% tariff. A U.S. administration official explained the measure by stating, "No country enforces the ban on forced labor to the level of the United States, and this provides an unfair advantage to other nations," adding, "Accordingly, the President will utilize all available means, including tariffs, to achieve the desired results."
