November 23, 1980, 7:34 PM. A magnitude 6.9 earthquake, centered between Irpinia and Basilicata, shook the earth for ninety interminable seconds. Entire villages collapsed as if made of papier-mâché. Approximately 2,900 people lost their lives, 9,000 were injured, and 280,000 were displaced. Two regions were brought to their knees and launched a desperate call for help. "Hurry," the newspapers headlined, "to save those still alive, to help those who have nothing left." The province of Potenza was devastated. Many found themselves on the streets, and to give them a home again, the Bucaletto neighborhood was built. The archbishop at the time, Giuseppe Vairo, provided land on which hundreds of prefabricated buildings were erected, with a life expectancy of 25 years. The commitment was to replace them as quickly as possible with better housing. Well, this "temporary solution" remains in place, at least for the most part.
