Journalism cannot report on political asylum from a place of ignorance. In recent days, I have seen how some Colombian media outlets discuss the case of Beto Coral using terms like "refugee," "asylum," and "international protection" casually, without explaining what they actually mean under the 1951 Geneva Convention. As a journalist in exile in France, I am more concerned about misinformation than opinion. Being a refugee is not a privilege, a political label, or a narrative device. It is a legal status recognized by a State after assessing whether a person faces a real risk of persecution for reasons such as their political opinions or membership in a particular social group. When a media outlet reduces this debate to simplistic headlines or ignores the scope of international law, it not only misinforms its readers but also trivializes a protection system built after World War II to save lives. Journalism has an obligation to verify the facts before offering an opinion. Reporting on asylum requires knowledge of international law, not simply reproducing statements or fueling polarization. Criticism can be legitimate.
