A visit to Shiare – “The Hanging Village” in Ghana
Shiare the village on a mountain in Ghana is a traditional capital of the Akyode of the Nkwanta South Municipality in the Oti Region. The village is believed to be 900 years old. Oral history says its inhabitants migrated from somewhere in Ejisu in the Ashanti region. To the Kwahu mountains in the Eastern region under king Atara phenom, then to their current location at shiare. Due to the topography of the area, houses in Shiare are built in a terrace form along the contour of the mountain, giving it a unique landscape. It derived its name, “The Hanging Village” from tourist Europeans who discovered the place some decades ago.
