On November 9, 1963, a massive coal dust explosion occurred at the Mitsui Miike Coal Mine's Mikawa Pit in Omuta City, Fukuoka Prefecture, when coal dust accumulated 400 meters underground ignited. Of approximately 1,400 workers, 458 lost their lives, and 839 of the survivors suffered from higher brain dysfunction due to carbon monoxide poisoning.
