Travail des enfants au Bangladesh : le côté sombre de l’industrie du cuir • FRANCE 24

Bangladesh is the world's second-largest leather exporter thanks to its cheap labor force: children. Children represent a quarter of the country's leather workers, according to a study by the University of Sussex. Paid as little as 35 euros a month, these young people are exposed to chemicals and work leather with sharp tools, without protection, for ten hours a day. Many of them have lost one or both parents and are forced to accept these working conditions to survive or support their families. This is despite the fact that it is illegal in Bangladesh to employ children under 14 and to assign hazardous tasks to people under 18. Some 90% of Bangladeshi tannery workers die before reaching the age of 50, according to the WHO. Reporting by Lisa Gamonet, Nabeel Ahmed, and Shehab Sumon.
