Margarita Moreno Soto: A Brief Account of Huixtla: According to research by Professor Alberto C. Culebro, Huixtla dates back to between 900 and 1100 AD. It is believed that the first houses were located along the banks of the river, which at that time had a different course than it does today. Professor Culebro mentions that about a kilometer inland, mounds of old constructions of Mam origin, but also with Mayan ancestry, were observed. The presence of the Spanish conquistadors is evidenced by two bronze jars, once used for oil and olives, discovered in 1941 by Porfirio Torres Romero on what is now known as Juárez Avenue No. 1. Another piece of evidence indicating the presence of some Spaniards, not only in Huixtla but also throughout the Soconusco region, is a bronze medallion bearing the coat of arms of Philip VII. This medallion was found in the old cemetery in Huixtla around the 1940s, where the Cuauhtémoc Federal Primary School later stood and where the Municipal Auditorium is currently located. It is also said that in 1930, foreign coins and ceramic objects were found on Juárez Street near the Manuel Rea School. The earliest historical accounts of Huixtla come from Friar Alfonso Ponce de León, a member of the Dominican order. In the memoirs this historical figure left behind, he recounts his arrival in Soconusco in 1586, as his destination was the royal city of Guatemala. That year, Alfonso Ponce noted that Huixtla was already an “important town with fewer than three hundred inhabitants, including Spaniards, mestizos, and indigenous people, and, like all of Soconusco, very rich in cacao, tobacco, and livestock.” Juan Pineda wrote in 1594 that Soconusco comprised several towns, including Escuintla, Huehuetán, Tuzantán, and Huixtla, with Huehuetán serving as the municipal seat.
