The film itself was broadcast on July 28, 1983. This promo was aired on July 21, 1983. At the time, weekly television magazines gave this film a fairly prominent place. As a “movie,” it was treated even more prominently than Ultraman in some listings. That was, of course, because Steve McQueen was still remembered as a major star. McQueen had died in 1980 at the age of only 50. As a side note, 1980 was also the year in which Alfred Hitchcock, Peter Sellers, and John Lennon passed away. Looking back, it was a strangely heavy year in popular culture. Returning to McQueen himself, one of his early starring roles was in the 1958 science fiction horror film The Blob, released in Japan under the title “McQueen no Zettai no Kiki (Pinch).” In that film, he played a high school student. He was 28. No matter how generously one looks at him, he does not look like a high school student. He looks more like a high school teacher. Yet there is something charming about watching him force his way through the role of a rebellious teenager whom no one in town will believe. After that, in the 1960s, McQueen would go on to become one of the defining action stars of his generation. By the time of Nevada Smith, he was in his mid-thirties. It is a performance from a star who had already come fully into his own. These recordings document Japanese television film promotion practices of the early 1980s, including narration style, editing rhythm, timing, and on-screen typography. They preserve details that cannot be recovered from the feature film or its official publicity materials: the way foreign films were framed, interpreted, and presented to Japanese television audiences.
