Hunter Rountree was born on December 16, 1911, in Texas. Until the age of 86, he was a law-abiding citizen. He had a successful business, owning his own company that supplied equipment for oil rigs. He was married to a woman named Frey, who had a son from a previous marriage, whom he adopted. And he raised him as his own son. In the 1970s, Rountree decided to get involved in investing. He sold his company for several million dollars and invested in shipyards. But this time, luck ran out. The investments failed, and the banks called in the loans. Around the same time, his stepson died in a car accident. And in 1986, his wife died. They had been married for almost 50 years. Rountree began drinking and using drugs. In 1989, he married 31-year-old Juanity Adams. She worked as a bar dancer and had two children. He was 78 at the time. He spent the rest of his savings on his young wife, but she eventually ran away from him a few years later. In December 1998, when he was 86, he committed his first bank robbery. He robbed a Soft Russbank in Mississippi. He wasn't even armed. He simply handed the teller a bag and demanded that she fill it with money. He kept his hand in his coat pocket, where he simply held a Coca-Cola bottle, thus simulating a weapon. The teller complied and filled the bag with money. As Roundy was leaving the bank, he was stopped by a police officer who happened to be driving by. He was sentenced to three years' probation, fined $260, and ordered to leave Mississippi immediately. Less than a year later, Roundy committed another robbery in this state in 1999. This time, he robbed a Nation Bank in Florida. This time, his loot was $8,000. He was also apprehended on the street by passersby. The teller ran after him, shouting, "It's a robber!" This time, he was sentenced to three years in prison. But after two years, he was paroled. And so, a year after his release, in August 2003, when he was already 91 years old, he went on the loose again. This time, his beneficiary was First American Bank in Texas. He handed the teller an envelope stating it was a robbery and that he had a bomb. He demanded that she fill his bag with money. The teller, looking at the 91-year-old man, didn't believe him at first. She asked him, "Are you kidding?" But he assured her he wasn't, that he actually had a bomb. And he would detonate it if she didn't fill the bag with money. But his loot turned out to be quite modest. Only $2,000. After the robbery, he got into his car and drove away. But he forgot to cover up the license plate. The bank's vice president remembered him. Half an hour later, he was detained and arrested. During the investigation, Roundry claimed to have pulled off several successful bank robberies. But the police didn't believe him. He likely only pulled off these three robberies, all of which ended in failure. When asked why he did it, he replied that the robberies helped him brighten up his dull everyday life. They helped him escape reality after the death of his wife, and also because he hated banks. Ultimately, the 91-year-old robber was sentenced to 12.5 years in prison.
