▼ In Brief ▼ Hesse looks back on a long and divided history. The efforts of Sophie of Brabant led to the creation of the Landgraviate of Hesse during the Thuringian-Hessian War of Succession. In the 16th century, Hesse was to be divided – the Landgraviate of Hesse-Kassel and Hesse-Darmstadt developed differently from then on.
