How to Notarize a Handwritten Document

Handwritten documents may be notarized, but they must have a notarial certificate attached. No certificate? Watch to learn what you can do. Notaries may notarize handwritten documents so long as they attach a completed notarial certificate to them. If a signer presents a handwritten document to you, the first step is to ask the signer to determine the type of notarization they need. Remember, choosing the notarial certificate for a signer is considered unauthorized practice of law, which is illegal. Once the signer has confirmed the notarial act, there are three ways to add the certificate wording:  1. Attach a separate certificate. 2. Handwrite the notarial wording. 3. Use a certificate stamp directly on the document or on a separate sheet. A common handwritten document is a holographic will, which outlines the signer’s wishes after death. The person who creates the will is the testator.
