Singapore Symphony in Sydney [Full Concert]
On 12 Feb 2025, led by our Quantedge Music Director Hans Graf, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra played in Australia for the first time in its 46-year history, kicking off its sold-out, three-city tour at the Sydney Opera House, before performing in Melbourne and Brisbane. Our special guest soloist was none other than Singapore's young violin star Chloe Chua @ChloeChuaviolinist , performing the Brahms Double Concerto together with Ng Pei-Sian, Principal Cellist of the SSO. The piece is inspired by a firefly species discovered in the Nee Soon swamp forest in Singapore, and features the traditional Chinese hammered dulcimer, the yangqin (扬琴). "Luciola singapura" has been performed by the SSO multiple times since its premiere at the SSO's National Day Concert in 2021, and is one of the orchestra's most frequently performed contemporary works by a Singaporean. Also touring with the SSO are 18-year-old Singaporean violin sensation Chloe Chua @ChloeChuaviolinist and the SSO’s Principal Cellist and The HEAD Foundation Chair Ng Pei-Sian, a Sydney-born Australian. They performed Brahms's Double Concerto for Violin & Cello, before surprising the audience with their take on Waltzing Matilda, Australia’s beloved unofficial national anthem. The SSO concluded the concerts with Tchaikovsky's magnificent Fifth Symphony, before presenting two encores.
