In this episode of Lwit Luo ‪@LakwedTV‬ we bring to you how Acoli people teach and prepare the girls and young men for courtship leading to marriage: A girl is taught by the mother on how to identify a responsible man which starts by looking straight into the suitor's eyes, false pretenses and debating on issues brought up by the suitors. She is also taught on how to manage and run her husband and home as well. This is done to prove the suitor's capabilities regarding his roles and responsibilities as a man! A boy is also taught the same around the fireplace"Wang oo" on how to identify a good and responsible woman. Courtship was basically meant to lead to marriage. It also helped in avoiding incest, witchcraft and other bad omen since both partners would thoroughly investigate each other's family background. A girl would give her handkerchief, waist bead as a token of love to prove the suitor's marriage proposal. Should there be any disagreement between the lovers due to being related, the other partner's home practicing witchcraft, being unable to marry or loss of love, the bead is to be returned plus the handkerchief or the matter would be addressed by the "rwot"- king in the chiefdom. This was done to avoid future predicaments. Courtship was mainly geared towards marriage but poor suitors would impregnate their partners so as to be allowed to settle with the girl. To sum it up,we urge that,thoui civilization brings about growth and development,it shouldn't change the cultural qualities and behavior of a person especially such rich heritage of the Acoli people.
