This area is sometimes called the "Reserve Quarters." The buildings and streets here are remarkably well-preserved, and for Nizhny Novgorod's anniversary (Nizhny 800), beautiful landscaping was added—all of this was achieved with great effort. This is the perfect place to talk about community, values, landscaping, and the historical environment. But we won't be discussing bricks or architecture, but people and society: how activists, architects, mayors, governors, preservationists, and ordinary residents are saving old buildings and filling the area with new functions. This is a complex process that often encounters protests—and we've seen all of that here. Even Navalny hasn't ignored these neighborhoods. Unlike many other Russian cities, however, here the residents were able to reach an agreement, and the city and the region helped them achieve it. The result is a wonderfully soulful place unlike anywhere else in Russia.
