Why was the first Afrikaans written in Arabic Letters?
Afrikaans is a West Germanic language spoken by around 13.5 million in South Africa, 60% of white South Africans, and 75% of the country's Coloured population. It is closely related to Dutch with which it shares 90-95% lexical similarities though several other languages have contributed to the development of Afrikaans. In this video I'll be looking at the Cape Malay minority, and the first written record of Afrikaans which was done not in the Roman Alphabet but rather in the Arabic script brought over by the servants and slaves of the Dutch from modern-day Malaysia and Indonesia.
