The pilot announced that the alert was due to an indication of smoke in the forward cargo hold. Flight time: 13m Aircraft: Embraer E175LR Shortly after takeoff from Portland, the first sign of trouble to me was an announcement for passengers to remain seated with their seatbelts “at this time”. Not long after one of the pilots came on PA and announced that there was an indication of smoke in the forward cargo hold, that they had declared an emergency, and that we would be returning to Portland immediately. The flight attendants went through their emergency procedures. Landing was uneventful. #flight
