The reason lies in physics: Water rises capillary action from the ground into the masonry, dissolving soil salts (nitrates, sulfates) and transporting them to the surface. There, the water evaporates – the salts remain. They crystallize in the pores of the plaster under pressure of up to 2,000 bar, literally blasting it off the wall. Neither paint, nor waterproofing slurry, nor standard renovation plaster can permanently withstand this mechanical pressure.
