Riding Melbourne’s New Gipps St Ramp & Federation Trail Link

What if Christmas doesn’t come from a store… what if Christmas means a brand-new bike path? 🎄🚲 In today’s ride, I channeled energy from the movie Elf and pedalled through Melbourne like Buddy discovering New York - wide-eyed, slightly confused, and VERY excited about infrastructure. This adventure rolls through the seven levels of the Candy Cane Forest (also known as inner Melbourne bike paths), past the Sea of Twirly-Swirly Gumdrops (the Yarra River), and straight onto the freshly opened Gipps Street Ramp - a shiny new link connecting the Main Yarra Trail / Capital City Trail through Abbotsford with zero stairs. A Christmas miracle. From there, I detour through the Melbourne CBD, spread a little festive cheer, then head west to Docklands to link onto the Dixon Veloway before checking out the newly opened elevated shared path at the West Gate Bridge. Yep, traffic-free, high above the chaos, and absolutely magical. The ride finishes by rolling onto the Federation Trail link at Hyde Street, unlocking a seamless connection from the inner city all the way west toward Williamstown, Altona and beyond. These new cycling links are a massive win for Melbourne cycling, active transport, and anyone who believes bikes make cities better.
