Mimang Langlu (Tibetan uprising song) Rise up! Decade after decade, we have endured oppression—our flesh cruelly cut down to the bone by the enemy that denies our freedom. In the year 1959, the patriotic people—desperate and unable to endure any longer—rose up for the sake of truth, having no other choice. Rise up, rise up! All Tibetans, people of the world, rise up with us! Bear witness to the truth. The protector of the land of Tibet, the great lord of refuge, the supreme wish-fulfilling jewel, is the supreme leader of all Tibetans, both in Tibet and in exile. To the enemy butcher, Red China, whose hands are covered in blood: we will drive you out of Tibet. All patriotic people—rise up! 1959 Tibetan Uprising (March 10, 1959) The Tibetan uprising of March 10, 1959 was a major revolt by Tibetans against the rule of the People's Republic of China in Lhasa, the capital of Tibet. On March 10, 1959, thousands of Tibetans surrounded the palace of the 14th Dalai Lama (Tenzin Gyatso) in Lhasa. Tibetans feared Chinese authorities might detain or harm him after he was invited to a Chinese military headquarters without his usual security. Large crowds gathered to protect the Dalai Lama and protest Chinese control over Tibet. Over the next several days, protests turned into an armed uprising between Tibetan resistance groups and Chinese forces. The People's Liberation Army eventually suppressed the revolt, leading to many deaths and arrests. On March 17, 1959, the 14th Dalai Lama fled Tibet and later took refuge in Dharamshala, India. Thousands of Tibetans also went into exile. The Chinese government dissolved Tibet’s traditional government and strengthened direct control over the region. Every year on March 10, Tibetans in exile and supporters around the world commemorate Tibetan National Uprising Day to remember those who resisted Chinese rule and to advocate for Tibetan rights.
