I’ve had a lot of questions about how to boost plant growth in a low-tech planted tank without going overboard on expensive gear. In this video, I’ll share practical tips I’ve discovered while keeping multiple planted aquariums, all of which rely on minimal equipment, cheap LED lights, and little to no liquid fertilizer. Even though I don’t inject CO₂, my aquatic plants are doing really well, so I hope these ideas help you, too. One of the first lessons I learned is to start off with easy aquatic plants. Many people have trouble because they pick advanced species right away. If you’re going for a low-tech setup, databases from Tropica or Dennerle let you filter plants by “easy,” which takes out the guesswork. My own favorites include Anubias, Bucephalandra, Cryptocoryne, Bacopa, Hygrophila, and Echinodorus. These plants don’t need intense lighting or constant fertilizer. Once you have some success with these, you can try medium-level or even advanced plants later. On the topic of lighting: a common mistake is using lights designed for aesthetics or mood rather than growth. Even in a low-tech planted aquarium, you’ll want a light with a decent PAR rating (Photosynthetically Active Radiation). Surprisingly, many good LEDs are budget-friendly, like the Nicrew C10 or Seaoura SR616. I’ve used both and found they provide enough intensity for lush plant growth—even with floating plants like duckweed on the surface. Another trick is to leverage your tank’s natural nutrient cycle. I only fertilize two out of thirteen aquariums, yet everything grows fine because I feed my fish, shrimp, and snails. Their waste, along with bits of decaying matter, eventually becomes a source of nutrients for the plants. In a heavily stocked planted tank with moderate feeding, you often don’t need additional fertilizer. The main exception is if you keep just one betta or a small group of fish, in which case there might not be enough waste to sustain all your plants. Also, a little flow can make a big difference. Whether you use a simple filter or a small pump, circulating the water helps move nutrients around so your aquarium plants can absorb them more easily. Even in setups without a traditional filter, like Walstad Method tanks, there’s still minor movement generated by fish, shrimp, and temperature differences. But if you’re starting out, a basic filter is recommended—it improves water quality and keeps nutrients from gathering in dead zones. When it comes to CO₂, you don’t have to invest in a pressurized system. In fact, plenty of aquatic plants will thrive just by utilizing the CO₂ produced by decomposing organic material. If you avoid heavily vacuuming every last bit of waste, your low-tech planted tank may get enough CO₂ naturally, especially if you keep surface agitation to a reasonable level. This doesn’t replicate what a high-tech CO₂ setup does, but it certainly helps. Stability is crucial, too. If your water parameters swing wildly, plants will melt or develop holes in their leaves. Keeping ammonia under control is a must. I cycle new tanks using a “dark start” method, adding fish and plants only once beneficial bacteria are established. This spares the plants from harsh ammonia spikes. Temperature also matters. Many species do better above about 22°C (71°F). Some, like Cryptocoryne and Echinodorus, may grow slowly or develop brown spots in cooler water.
