The second speaker at our Mosaic evening on May 20th at the Bégin Center in Jerusalem, historian Georges Bensoussan, addressed the West's ambivalent position toward Israel since the beginnings of Zionism. He emphasized the limitations of a support that constantly shirks its responsibilities when Israel asserts its sovereignty. He traces this back to the Christian conception that it is impossible to recognize a people who have not acknowledged the messiahship of Jesus. And this is why it appears that the return of the Jewish people to their land is tolerated only insofar as it does not lead to their complete emancipation from the tutelage of nations.
